Midsommar - What did I just see?

I was looking forward to watching this.  I so enjoyed Heredity. This is similar in its atmosphere of unknown danger and foreshadowing and ultimate sacrifice to lesser gods. If you do watch it and this is not for the faint of heart.  Some very gruesome imagery is peppered through out the movie as well as a graphic sex scene. I thought the mating ritual was ridiculous and could not stop laughing.
The writer/director, Ari Aster, wrote this in response to his own break up. So the main story is this slow burn of a break up between Dani and Christian. The method that brings this break up is a Midsummer festival that pulls them finally apart.

What is scary, if reality is scary for you, is that this festival is done today for the same reasons. Catholicism has tried to mask the reasons for the festival, calling it St John's day, but ultimately nothing has changes as the movies shows. One character says in swedish happy St. John's day.
Like his Aster's previous movie Hereditary, he brings in the true to life occultic practices that are preformed now and gaining popularity.

It's hard to watch some things from this and his previous movie but worth while if you are curious as to what the future is for mankind and that is resorting to the old ways.
